Who is LTE Cat M1/NB1 Suitable For?

LTE Cat M1 and NB1 (also known as NB-IoT) are specially designed for applications with:

  • Low data volume: Typically under 5 MB per month
  • Uncritical latency: Seconds instead of milliseconds are acceptable
  • Long battery life: More power-efficient than classic LTE
  • Wide network coverage: Better building penetration than LTE Cat 1+

If you need high data rates or low latency, we recommend our LTE modems.

FAQ

LTE Cat M1 (also called eMTC) and Cat NB1 (NB-IoT) are cellular standards specially developed for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications. They offer lower data rates than classic LTE, but better building penetration, longer battery life and lower cost per device.

Yes, the IOTMOD1 has exactly the same form factor as our 4G3LTE and 4G4LTE modems. You can switch to a faster LTE modem at any time without changing wiring or enclosure. Driver support is also identical.

The IOTMOD1 uses a Mini-SIM (2FF). For IoT applications we recommend special M2M SIM cards or IoT tariffs from your mobile carrier. These often offer better terms for low data volume and longer contract terms.

Yes, the integrated GNSS module (GPS, Galileo, BeiDou, GLONASS) operates independently of the cellular connection. You can capture position data and store locally even when no network connection exists.

The integrated GNSS module achieves typical accuracy of 2-5 meters under open sky. Indoors or with restricted sky view, accuracy may be lower or no fix possible. For higher precision external GNSS antennas are recommended.

LTE Cat M1/NB1 is optimized for power-efficient applications. Actual battery life depends heavily on transmission frequency. With one transmission every 15 minutes and 100 bytes, several years of battery operation are realistic – with properly sized battery and sleep modes.

Yes, NB-IoT is specially designed for better building penetration. It reaches locations that classic LTE cannot – e.g. basements, underground garages or meter cabinets. Actual range depends on local network coverage.

Yes, the Quectel BG96 chipset supports MQTT natively via the extended AT command set. You can establish MQTT connections and send messages without an additional microcontroller or gateway.

IoT tariffs start at a few euros per month for low data volumes. Many providers offer special M2M tariffs with volume pricing (e.g. 10 MB/month). For larger quantities, pooling tariffs are interesting where multiple SIM cards share a data volume. We are happy to advise on tariff selection.
